Distribution Groups – Switch Policies

About: A Distribution Group's switch policy determines how the group selects which source is used for Occasional Use (OU) bookings.

Overview

When a Distribution Group has multiple sources configured, the switch policy controls how the active source, the one actually used when an Occasional Use booking runs gets determined. There are two switch policy options: Manual and Scheduled.

Choosing the right policy depends on whether you want central control over source selection at the group level, or flexible per-booking source assignment.

Manual Switch Policy

With the Manual switch policy, the active source is set at the Distribution Group level and applies to all current and future OU bookings in that group.

  • The active source is selected directly on the Distribution Group, all OU bookings in the group will use this source

  • Individual bookings cannot override the source selection while this policy is active

Use this policy when you want centralized, consistent control over which source all bookings in the group use, for example, during a planned source switchover that should affect all bookings simultaneously.

Scheduled Switch Policy

With the Scheduled switch policy, each individual booking determines its own source. The group's active source updates automatically to reflect whichever booking is currently running.

  • Each OU booking has its own source selection, independent of other bookings in the group
  • When a booking becomes active, the Distribution Group's active source automatically updates to match that booking's source selection

  • The active source at the group level cannot be set manually while this policy is active

     

Use this policy when different bookings in the same group need to use different sources — for example, when multiple customers or events are sharing a Distribution Group but drawing from separate feeds.

Changing the Switch Policy

You can switch between policies at any time. The LTN Portal will automatically carry over the current source selection to preserve continuity:

  • Switching from Manual to Scheduled: Each existing booking's source selection will be set to match the group's current active source
  • Switching from Scheduled to Manual: The group's active source will be set to match the source selection of whichever booking is currently active
Hint: Source continuity is maintained automatically during a policy change, no manual reassignment of sources to bookings is required.

Attention: Changing the switch policy affects all bookings in the group. Review your active and upcoming bookings before making a change.

To change the Switch policy, you go to the Modify Distribution Group dialog via the table view context menu and then select the switch policy from the dropdown.
